Es ist erstaunlich, wie ereignisreich  eine jedes Jahr der jüngeren Zeitgeschichte war. Auch 1961 hatte historische und künstlerische Höhepunkte in Hülle und Fülle: der Kosmonaut Yuri Gagarin flog ins All, Jean Seberg drehte den Film „Brennende Haut“, John F. Kennedy wurde zum US-Präsidenten gewählt, der erste demokratisch gewählte Präsident des Kongo Patrice Lumumba wurde ermordet. Die CIA-Invasion in der kubanischen Schweinebucht scheiterte, die DDR begann am 13. August mit dem Bau der Berliner Mauer.
Auch im Jazz geschah viel Neues: Art Blakey, Hank Mobley, Roland Kirk, John Coltrane, Stan Getz, Eric Dolphy, Jimmy Giuffre, Ornette Coleman, Sun Ra, Gil Evans, Max Roach, Dave Brubeck und etliche andere mehr brachten wegweisende Alben auf den Markt. Der Hardbop als weichere Variante des Bebop eroberte den Publikumsgeschmack, der einzigartige Gitarrist Wes Montgomery und die Vibraphonisten Cal Tjader und Gary Burton gehörten zu dessen Protagonisten. Chrome Dreams setzt seine Jahrgangsreihe mit diesem Jahr und seinem Jazz-Füllhorn fort und präsentiert mit 25 ausgewählten Titeln auf 2 CDs mit LP-Quellenangaben einen attraktiven Querschnitt.
